Underwater Navigation
Underwater Navigation Have you ever gotten lost while diving? Is it something you worry about? Or have you been on a scuba tour and wondered how your instructor didn’t get lost? If so, underwater navigation is for you! Underwater navigation skills serve divers in many ways. Confidence in navigation helps ease anxiety, avoid long surface swims, converse air, and avoid buddy separation. Scuba divers use a couple different techniques to find their way underwater. They track distance, use natural landmarks, and tools like compasses to navigate. Distance Estimation Perhaps the most common way divers estimate distance is by counting kick cycles. To measure a kick cycle, you can swim at an enjoyable pace and counts the times one leg returns to the same position, thus measuring the distance traveled by one complete fin stroke. Aloha! The Hawaii Experience via the Divemaster Work-Trade Program
The Move “Aloha! Welcome to Hawaii! We’re glad your here!” This phrase has been said to me over and over, but I never get tired of hearing it. Picking up your life and moving across the country, even just for a couple months, is scary. You don’t know the area or the people. The culture is different and confusing. When you step off the plane, you realize you are in a whole new land by yourself, and that can be a painfully lonely realization. Luckily, that’s not the Hawaii experience. Although of course I can only speak from my immediate experience and from that of those around me, the vote is unanimous, coming to Hawaii is one of the best decisions you can make. My first day consisted of a beautiful ride from the Honolulu airport across the island to…

Top Five Biggest Worries of Scuba Diving Deconstructed
Have concerns about diving? In this blog post, we’re going to deconstruct the biggest scuba diving worries. 1. Running out of Air One of the biggest concerns of divers, and also one of the most easily avoidable, is running out of air. Your air gauge measures how much PSI is left in your tank. Fifteen-hundred is half a tank, and 500 means you’re low on air. If you ever get to 500 PSI, signal to guide. After that, we can surface swim to wherever we need to be. Being honest when your guide asks you how much air you have left is the easiest way to not run out of air. Another way to avoid running out of air is breathing slowly. At Hawaii Eco Divers, we recommend a three second breath in, and a four second breath out. Maintaining…
