Kayaking Oahu — The Buddy System
The first and most important lesson in kayak training is to never kayak alone. Both first-time and experienced kayakers benefit from bringing a buddy along on their kayaking trip.
The most obvious advantage to pairing up is that there is somebody to help you should something go wrong. Kayaking is safe and fun, but it’s always a good idea to have a backup in place just in case.
But the other benefit to buddying up while kayaking is sharing the experience with another person. When you are kayaking in Oahu, you will see some of the most spectacular natural wonders you may ever experience. You will definitely want to share them with somebody else.
Kayaking Oahu — Three Points of Contact
When sitting in your kayak, for maximum safety and comfort it’s important to keep three points of contact at all times.
The first is the small of your back, which should be tight against the seatback. As you sit in the cockpit, sit up straight or lean forward so that you keep contact with with the seatback.
The second is the balls of your feet, which should be braced against the foot pedals that control the rudder. Before you set out, remember to adjust the foot pedals to the length of your legs while keeping your knees bent.
Finally, your bent knees should be in firm contact with either side of the kayak’s cockpit. When you are in the water, this is the way to contrrol the boat’s side-to-side movement.
